Claire Muehleisen

I have had a strong connection to art and music throughout my life. I grew up moving between Washington State and Salt Lake City, Utah, often visiting my grandfather’s art studio in Mexico where I was exposed to the rich artistic culture there. It was during these formative years that I learned how integral art and music are to self expression and communication. I started playing classical guitar when I was seven years old but soon switched to voice when I got the opportunity to sing and tour internationally with the Madeleine Cathedral Choir where we were taught sight-reading, pitch, rhythm and harmony.

I sang in numerous bands and choirs high school and into college, but eventually switched my focus to visual art and creative writing. During my undergrad at The Evergreen State College a large part of my work was focused on fluidity and the necessity of motion in relation to self identity and the ever changing standards in our society. I have also produced a number of works relating to climate change and environmental degradation.

In 2020, during the covid-19 shut-down, I found myself unemployed and in need of a creative outlet. With all the local art studios shut down, I returned to music. It was a miraculous rediscovery and in that moment I was lucky enough to find Waking Bear. Through the friendships and community I have gained in and through this band, I have been able to grow as a musician and a person.
